Elvis ‘TCB’ ring expected to fetch $500k at Hollywood auction

The TCB on the ring stands for ‘Taking Care of Business’

A gold and diamond “TCB” ring worn by Elvis Presley is expected to fetch more than $500,000 at a memorabilia auction in Los Angeles that ranges from rock guitars to a set of master tapes from the Woodstock festival.

The Elvis Presley ring is described as the first in a series of rings with the TCB (Taking Care of Business) letters and lightning bolt motif that the singer adopted as his mantra in1969 when he returned to performing concerts after focusing on movies.

“It’s the quintessential Elvis jewelry piece,” said Brigitte Kruse, founder of GWS Auctions.

Ms Kruse said she thought the ring could fetch anything between $500,000 and $1 million at the 300-item auction on 28 November.

Elvis gave the ring, made up of multiple diamonds that weigh a total of 9.81 carats and which he designed himself, to his opening band singer JD Sumner in 1975.

Elvis, who died in 1977 at age 42, was also a motor bike fan.

A 1975 FLH 1200 Harley-Davidson that he liked to ride around his Graceland estate in Memphis carries a pre-sale estimate of $300,000 – $350,000, GWS said. Another of his bikes was sold for $800,000 in September 2019.

The most expensive lot could be a collection of master tapes from the 1969 Woodstock festival that sat in a producer’s storage locker for more than ten years and have never been available for sale before.

The 700 plus hours of tapes, independently valued at $1.6m, include performances by Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, The Who and dozens more artists who took part in what is seen as a cornerstone of hippie culture.

Ms Kruse said it was difficult to estimate how much the Woodstock tapes might sell for.

“There’s just nothing to compare it to,” she said. “Every now and then we bump into those pieces that are truly exceptional and things you wouldn’t even think still existed.”

MY FASCINATION WITH ELVIS

My fascination and love for Elvis started back in early 60’s when I heard Elvis sing ‘It’s Now or Never’. From then onwards I have been a number one fan. I joined the Official Elvis Presley Fan club and received a monthly magazine for many years.

Over the years I have bought many singles, EP’s & LP’s of Elvis, which are now neatly packed away to avoid damage.  I saw every one of his films and knew that most of them Elvis didn’t want to make. For me it was just that Elvis was the Star and that I could see him.  In those days it was very expensive to fly to Memphis so watching Elvis in film was the next real thing. I have also collected many news cuttings, pictures, and posters through the years which I have also kept in large albums.

I remember the day when Elvis died. I woke in the morning to hear all Elvis records being played on the radio,  I thought to myself this is strange, my husband said to me that Elvis had died during the night. I could not believe it, I was so upset, and for months I could not play or listen to any Elvis music. Even now I can’t watch Elvis singing ‘Unchained Melody’ as it just breaks my heart to see him like he was.

After getting married and having a family and then moving to France with my family, my dream was to visit Graceland, so I planned that on my 60th Birthday I would take my sister to Graceland, as it was an important birthday.

For those Elvis Fans who have never visited Graceland it was an experience I will never forget...... read more
